As he falls in love with his cousin Sue Bridehead, Judes life becomes a tumultuous journey that challenges his moral, religious, and social beliefs. Upon its release, this novel sparked considerable controversy in late Victorian England due to its frank discussions of marriage and religion. Critically panned at the time, it ultimately prompted Hardy to shift his focus from novels to poetry for the remainder of his career.
